STOP THAT NOSE!

THE DRAGON INSIDE

STOP THAT NOSE!
1. STOP THAT NOSE! is built on rhymes. Play rhyming word
games with the kids. Start with one word--how many rhymes can
your class come up with. This is a great way for students to
discover fun in language and improve their sense of its musical
nature.
2. In STOP THAT NOSE! Dad's nose runs away. If your nose ran
away, where would it go? Let the kids develop their own wacky
stories. Help them discover what their noses might see, sniff,
and smell. If it was in another location, in a big city, on a farm,
in another country, would it smell different things? Living near
Hershey, PA, we often smell chocolate in the breeze!
3. If you were going to write a story about one of your body
parts, which one would you write about? What adventures does your
foot, hand mouth, tongue have each and every day? Find a new way to
think about how a part of you interacts with the world.
4. Discover the talents of the nose. Let your students take
the blindfold test. Blindfold them and have them identify different
spices or scents. Have them taste something while pinching their
nose closed. Does that change how the food tastes? Help them
discover the quirky talents of their proboscises.
5. Research some of the fun animals in the book--aardvark,
antelope, alligator, ape. What special talents do they have? What
kinds of things might they smell? Would you want to switch noses
with them?

THE DRAGON INSIDE is a hi/lo book
which is part of the Power Up! series from Steck-Vaughn. It is
designed for students who want a good story, but need a standardized
vocabulary. The story also allows for discussions about ways to
express anger. How can art help people channel their emotions? What
happens when someone close to you is upset? How can you help? How
does it affect you? Everyone has challenging life events. This book
will help open up discussions of how to deal with strong feelings.
